Disregard ‘Akwabaa Insurance’, not approved – NIC

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has said it has not approved any ‘Akwabaa Insurance’ for international travellers arriving in the country.

It has therefore called on the general public to ignore reports of a purported compulsory ‘Akwabaa Insurance.’  

There were reports that all international travellers who arrive at the Kotoka International Airport will have to sign up for an insurance cover at the end of the first quarter of the year mandatorily.

According to the reports, the are three insurance companies  in the forefront of the ‘Akwaaba Insurance’ including State Insurance Company PLC (SIC), GLICO Insurance and Enterprise Insurance.    

Reacting to the report in a statement issued by the NIC, the commission, denied any such insurance cover.

It said: “It has come to the notice of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) that a publication on the above-mentioned product which is purported to be mandatory for all international travellers arriving in Ghana effective end of first quarter 2022 is being circulated”.

“The NIC wishes to advise the general public that the said ‘Akwabaa Insurance’ has not been approved by the Commission and as such any publication to that effect should be disregarded”, the statement concluded.
